John Chilembwe Was A Heartitst

A heartist doesn’t have to be an artist per se. We define a heartist as someone who has the heart of God, someone who seeks to be the change they want to see. Ordinary people live extraordinary lives. One such person is John Chilembwe.

John Chilembwe (1871 – 3 February 1915) was a Baptist pastor and educator, who trained as a minister in the United States, returning to Nyasaland in 1901. He was an early figure in the resistance to colonialism in Nyasaland (Malawi), opposing both the treatment of Africans working in agriculture on European-owned plantations and the colonial government's failure to promote the social and political advancement of Africans. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Chilembwe organized an uprising against colonial rule. To

day, Chilembwe is celebrated as a hero of independence, and John Chilembwe Day is observed annually on 15 January in Malawi.

15 January is the date that Malawians celebrate the life and work of John Chilembwe. John Chilembwe is like the Martin Luther of Malawi. He stood up for what was right when wrong seemed so strong. He stood up for truth. As a minister, it wasnt enough for him to preach the truth. He lived the truth!

You can be a heartist too. Seek to live after the heart of God. And be the change you wnat to see!
